Padmashri Mohan Singh Gunjiyal, Assistant Commandant (Retd.)
Director (Technical Training)
Assistant Commandant MS Gunjyal served with the ITBP for nearly 4 decades. in his tenure there he received training in rock climbing, mountaineering, and skiing from the ITBP Ski and Mountaineering Institute. He is an accomplished mountaineer and has scaled Mount Everest. He has scaled several other peaks including Kamet and Nanda Devi in Garhwal and others in Siachen and Zanskar. He served as a senior instructor at the ITBP Skiing and Mountaineering Institute, Auli.
He has received the Tensing Norgay National Award for outstanding achievement from the President of India. He was part of several High Altitude Search and Rescue operations in the Himalayas where he saved the lives of many mountaineers, for which he received a commendation from the President of India.
In 2006 he was awarded the prestigious Padmashri by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, President of India, for adventure sports.
Capt(Retd) Laxman Singh Negi

Capt Negi, served in the 3rd Garhwal Rifles. During his long tenure in the Indian Army he has scaled Kamet and Nanda Devi, been on an Everest expedition and scaled more than 20 peaks. He has undergone specialist training at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) and the elite High Altitude Warfare School ( HAWS), Gulmarg, Kashmir. Capt Negi has also been a Senior Instructor at both Nehru Institute of Mountaineering(NIM) and High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS). He now lives in Uttarkashi.
Capt.(Retd.) Satal Singh Panwar
Capt. Satal Singh Panwar served with the 3rd Garhwal Rifles. He has received training from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) and the army’s High Altitude Warfare School. He has scaled many peaks in Garhwal including Jogin, Satopanth, Nanda Devi. In 2009 he summited Everest.He has also served as a senior instructor at the Nehrau Instittute of Mountaineering (NIM), High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS) and the Siachin Battle School. At present he lives in Uttarkashi.
The idea of outdoor education always fascinated Ajay and initiated him into his love for nature and the study of birds. He has spent more than 20 years learning about what he refers fondly as his ‘avian friends’. According to Ajay birding unfolds many mysteries of nature while allowing us to interpret nature through the lives of birds. For the last decade Ajay has been in charge of the Bird Conservation Project at Welham Boy’s School in Dehradun. He has also trained Birding Guides and Nature Guides of the Forest Department. He is a national resource person for SPIC MACAY and regularly conducts Nature and Heritage walks for nature lovers. Ajay lives in Dehradun
Digamber Singh Panwar was a senior instructor at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering having extensive climbing and teaching experience. Digamber has worked with international expeditions and has been a visiting faculty at various premier institutions of India. He has climbed most of the prominent peaks in the district of Uttarkashi. He is based in Uttarkashi.
Instructor, Outdoor photography and birding
Bhumesh has had a long love affair with the mountains and he expresses this love through photography. Over the years he has honed an interest in birds into a thorough and expansive knowledge of the birds of the region. Bhumesh lives in Dehradun.
NK Jit Bahadur Gurung
NK Gurung, served with the 1/5 Gorkha Rifles. . He has received training at High Altitude Welfare School as well as Commando and Unarmed Combat Training during his service with the Indian Army. Nk. Gurung is now associated with the Nanda Devi Institute as a Senior Instructor and teaches rock and rope craft along with skiing and survival skills. He now lives in Dehradun.
Chief Instructor (Skiing)
Pitri Prasad Khanduri, recently retired from the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam. He received professional training from the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering as well as from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM). He served as the Chief Instructor of Skiing at the Ski training centre of GMVN at Auli. He now lives in Dehradun.
Dharmendra Singh Negi
Dharmendra is a trained mountaineer and Search and Rescue professional. He led the Nanda Devi Institute’s Search & Rescue/ Relief team during the flash floods of 2013 in the Kedarnath region. He has also been a guest instructor at Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi. He has worked with some of the top adventure companies in the country. He introduced and established various high pole and obstacle exercises in the NDI Campus. He is a master of advanced rope and rock craft and outdoor games. He lives in Uttaron, Uttarkashi.
Saurav has received training in mountaineering as well as Search and Rescue and Method of Instruction (MOI) from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. He is a guest faculty at the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM). Saurav specializes in modern techniques of rock/snow craft and search & rescue. He lives in Uttarkashi.
Vijay Pal Butola
Vijay has received training as a Nature Guide from the Eco tourism Division of the Uttarakhand Forest Department. He has also received Basic and Advanced mountaineering training from Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) Uttarkashi as well as trained in basic and intermediate skiing from the Ski Institute of GMVN at Auli. Vijay is also involved in NDI’s program on Birding for livelihood promotion in the remote villages of Uttarakhand. He lives in Lata, gateway village to the Nanda Devi National Park.
Bhagyan Singh Panwar
Bhagyan has trained in Advanced mountaineering and Search & Rescue from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) Uttarkashi and has also been a guest instructor at NIM. He has also been an instructor with the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation. He is a certified instructor from NIM. He lives in the remote village of Agoda, on the way to Dodital in Uttarkashi District.
Nari has received training from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Basic/ Advanced mountaineering and Method of Instruction. He is associated with the Mountain Shepherds, since its inception stage. Nari lives in Lata, the gateway village to the Nanda Devi National Park in Chamoli District.
Kavita has done Basic and Advanced courses from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. She is also a certified instructor from the Nehru Institute. Her MOI course report describes her as ‘confident, systematic and methodical in her approach. She displayed high average teaching temperament, command & control and safety.’ Kavita lives in the village of Bhukki in the higher Himalayan region of Uttarkashi.
Sumila is a trained mountaineer and Qualified Instructor from Nehru Institute of Mountainerig. She has extensively worked as a guest instructor with NIM. She lives in the remote village of Bhukki in Uttarkashi District.
